Social Action
2011-2012 Community Collection Schedule
(Schedule subject to change.)
Social Action and Justice work has been an integral component of the
Unitarian Universalist Association since it’s inception. Social justice
work is the common denominator of all UU congregations. A few examples
of advocacy positions the UUA has taken are:
-
rights of
conscientious objectors to the war in Vietnam
-
support of the
Voting and Civil Rights Acts
-
rights of
gay and lesbian
people, including marriage equality
-
publishing the
Pentagon Papers
-
support of
women’s rights
-
spoke out against
our country’s aggression when the first Gulf War started in 1991 and
again ten years later when the US entered hostilities in Afghanistan
and Iraq.
A
few of the issues our Fellowship has actively been involved with are:
-
Environmental
issues such as recycling, sustainability, locally grown foods
-
Community
Collections to support local non-profit organizations
-
Organizing
community workshops on environmental topics
-
Co-sponsoring the
Martin Luther King Jr. Community Celebration
-
Supporting GLBT
individuals and becoming a Safe Zone and Welcoming Congregation
-
Sponsoring meals at
the Salvation Army and House of Peace
-
Creation of Green
Sanctuary Committee
-
Supporting the work
of the Unitarian Universalist Service Committee

We
will continue to work on social justice issues that effect our local
Central Wisconsin community and the world at large.
